This is the story of our journey from Phuket to Koh Samui to find the villa of our dreams

The Road Much Travelled Part 1   We visited the site in Koh Samui and sat under the coconut trees in the centre of our marked out site. The view was stunning and it all felt right. This was the beginning of a four year journey to completion of KARMA SAMUI VILLA 14.

the ambiance

We started to look for a villa, in Kata, on the South side of Phuket in 1993, as we really liked the ambiance at this end of the island. We spent many wonderful holidays in Mon Tri’s Boathouse and scouted the area for our place in the sun. At this time, there were very few developments in Kata and Phuket generally and to find one we liked and within our price range was difficult.

Eventually, in 2002, we put a deposit on a 3 bedroomed Penthouse with a Lanna style roof (off plan) in the area we wanted overlooking Kata Noi beach in Kata, Phuket. A few weeks later, Adrian went to a property exhibition in Hong Kong for Royal Samui Beach (now rebranded to Karma Samui) and rang me to say that he thought he had found the perfect place for us in Koh Samui.

Initially, I panicked as we had concentrated our minds on a place in Phuket, even though we had first visited Samui island in 1989. Within two days, we had decided to purchase Plot No14 in Royal Samui Beach, as we had always wanted a villa rather than a condominium.

We were relieved when we got our deposit back from the Phuket property and could not believe our luck, years later, when we found that the Lanna style Penthouse was not built as described in the plan - but with a flat roof - a lucky escape!

interior design

Both of us enjoy doing interior design and had experience doing a number of homes in the U.K. However, we had never done a complete home from afar as we live in Hong Kong, but we decided we would spend time and money to get it right first time, a good policy, as we didn’t have money to waste.

We visited regularly and found it difficult to accept how slow things were moving, not realising that this is par for the course in Thailand. We were in regular contact with the Project Manager du jour and these persons changed a number of times over the period.

Our original construction plan consisted of different pavilions for all 3 bedrooms and lounge dining area - Bali style. When the land title was changed to Chanote - the top title - the plans were changed. Again this regularly happens but it worked in our favour as one of the bedrooms was put downstairs on another level and the whole direction of the villa changed from east facing to due south - another bonus.

It was at this point that Adrian scrutinised the plans and we managed to change the position of the pool and sala and to extend the balcony outside the master bedroom.

At last, two years after paying our deposit, building started on the site with 34 individual villas. The Marketing slogan at the time was “Are You One Of The 34?” We certainly were, in fact, I believe, we were the first to purchase.

Shortly afterwards, Adrian produced a video report, presented by himself, for Karma on the progress of the site. He interviewed Richard Manser the Chief Architect who took Adrian on a tour of the site and explained the whole building process to him on camera. This was well received by the owners, as many were anxious about the time it was taking to build.

During the initial two years, Adrian and I spent most weekends looking at furniture and lamps, and voraciously devouring design books and magazines.

Journey from Phuket to Koh Samui to find the villa of our dreams

We had similar ideas on what we liked and what would suit the stunning position we now had with views of the sea from all rooms. It was at this point that we decided to be bold and create the White Villa. Many people thought we were crazy as we also intended to rent when not in residence.  The kitchen was included in the purchase price but as it was dark brown we took the decision to put our own kitchen in and make it ALL WHITE!  continue this story...
